Question 1
how our Ots uses, develops or challenges forms and conventions of real life media products
Our inspiration for our OTS was the release the hounds OTS (2013) and The grudge 3 (2009)
Our video pays respect and therefore uses inspiration from the following clips: Saw (2004), The exorcist (1973), Release the hounds, The grudge 3 (2009), paranormal activity 4 (2012). All these clips that are shown in the video below are used as comparisons which matches our OTS somehow, using our own interpretation and response from the inspiration.
Other Conventions/ Theory Followed:
Conventions challenged:
Our opening title sequence challenged convention by using 4 evil characters instead of one.
Conventions challenged:
Our opening title sequence challenged convention by using 4 evil characters instead of one.
Reasons we used these clips
Saw (2004):
This scene showed the man sawing his leg off for freedom. We felt this scene from SAW fit well because of the violence and the high camera angle used. The Scene also shows that a killer is not sawing the man's leg off, leading it to be his decisions; just like we have showed in our clip of the self harm on the wrist. Our OTS fits convention by matching the similar scene in SAW and by applying a similar colour choice for the location and background. The white T shirt that the girl is wearing in our OTS represents innocence and vulnerability, inspired from one of the victims from SAW as he is also wearing a white t shirt. |
The Exorcist(1973): The titles used from the exorcist gave us inspiration to use the same style font. We felt the style writing from The Exorcist used for the titles looked and reminded us of the font which is used to write on graves. Our OTS fits convention by matching the writing using a similar font in The Exorcist. |
Release The Hounds:
The clips in the scene have been edited at a fast pace, showing part of the location of where it is set. It is set in acres of land, in the woods which creates a lot of dramatic tension. We felt these clips from Release The Hounds fits well because it has been set and presented in a similar location to our OTS. Our opening title sequence fits convention by matching the similar scene in Release The Hounds and by applying a similar colour choice excluding the pop of colour which they used green. |
The Grudge 3 (2009)
This scene shows the grudge fighting her way forward to the victim. she's unstable and possessed causing her to be evil. We felt this scene from The Grudge 3 fit well because it both shows young, possessed girls in white at a neutral angle. The scene also showed the girl just stood there very slowly moving forward towards the victim. Our OTS fits convention by matching the similar scene inTh Grudge 3 and by applying a similar colour choice while editing. The White Top that the girl is wearing in our OTS stereotypically represents her as vulnerable and innocence however it doesn't match the stereotype because she is possessed and evil. |
Paranormal activity 4(2012):
This jump scene in paranormal activity 4 shows the possessed girl jump at the camera screen. We felt this scene from Paranormal Activity 4 fit well because they are both possessed females close up to the screen with dis-coloured eyes, and wounds. Our OTS fits convention by matching the similar scene in Paranormal Activity 4 but however does not have similar colours but still creates the same terror during the jump-scare. |
Texas Chainsaw 3D(2013)
This scene shows the figure coming towards the camera in a disguise. We felt this scene from Texas Chainsaw 3D fit well because they both contain a disguised character walking towards the camera from a graveyard at a neutral angle. Our OTS fits convention by matching the similar scene in Texas Chainsaw 3D and by applying a similar colour choice of the location and background. |
SAW Trailer(2008)
We chose these clips from the trailer to compare because of the pace used. It flicks between a numerous amount of clips showing loads of different things that are happening, also known as a montage. We felt this part of the trailer from SAW fit well because they are both fast paced montages. Our OTS fits convention by matching the similar scene in SAW and by applying similar location and background. The girls white top represents vulnerability and innocence. |
The False Awakening Trailer(2014)
This scene shows the woman waking up from her dream, now being in reality and realising that everything was just a dream. We felt this scene from The False Awakening fit well because of it going from horror, to reality. Our OTS fits convention by matching the similar scene in The False Awakening. |
